Cannabis Is Now Legalized In South Africa: Constitutional Court

Unic Press UK: In a landmark ruling, the topmost court of the Republic of South Africa, the Constitutional Court, decriminalized the private use of cannabis in homes.

In a unanimous decision delivered Tuesday, the Deputy Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court, Judge Raymond Zondo, declared that people cultivating/smoking cannabis (also known as “dagga” in South Africa) in the privacy of their homes are not liable to prosecution.

Given this ruling of the Constitutional Court of South Africa, the possession of cannabis in public spaces remains illegal, and anyone publicly smoking or cultivating it may be found liable for a crime in the event of prosecution. Dealing in cannabis remains illegal in South Africa.
