U.S. Files Case Against Russia Over Import Taxes, WTO Opens Consultation

Unic Press UK: The U.S. government has requested the World Trade Organization (WTO) to open dispute consultation with respect to additional duties applied by the Russian government on a range of imports of U.S. goods.

The United States is claiming that the additional duties imposed by Russia are not consistent with the provisions of the WTO’s General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) 1994.

This request for dispute consultation gives the parties an opportunity to reach a mutual resolution without resort to litigation. If the consultations between the parties does not resolve the dispute, then the U.S. may request adjudication by a panel.

The duties imposed by Russia are part of retaliatory measures in the light of U.S. sanctions.

“Russia’s retaliatory measures, targeting $87.6 million worth of US goods, covers just a minimal part of Russia’s estimated losses of $450 million due to US metal tariffs,” the RT reports
