Buhari Posthumous Award To Abiola Is Belated, Deceitful – Martin Onovo

Unic Press UK: The posthumous award of Nigeria’s highest honour, the Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR), to Moshood Abiola is belated/deceitful, the Independent Newspaper, Nigeria, has reported, quoting a renowned consultant engineer and former presidential candidate Martin Onovo.

During an interview with the Independent Newspaper based in Nigeria, Martin Onovo said: “Buhari is not a democrat. He does not love democracy and he has no respect for the rule of law, which Abiola symbolises and which Gani Fawehinmi fought for. Nigerians are intelligent and can read between the lines. That is why many people have been criticizing his action since it was announced.” Onovo believes that President Buhari actions, including the award to Moshood Abiola and Gani Fawehinmi, are signs that the president is desperate to remain in power beyond 2019.

The renowned engineer and politician Onovo was reacting to the press statement of 6 June, in which, the Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari not only declared the late Moshood Abiola as the presumed winner of the 12 June 1993 Presidential Election, but also posthumously honoured the late politician/businessman with Nigeria’s highest honour.

Onovo, who is among the few patriotic Nigerians of eminent standing who would likely contest the 2019 Presidential Elections under a coalition of about forty political parties, further contends that President Buhari seems very desperate to cling to power.
