Secondus garnered 2,000 votes (which is, circa 87% of the total), while the three other contestants [Raymond Dokpesi, Tunde Adeniran and Taoheed Adedoja] shared the remaining 296 (13%).
Raymond Dokpesi and Tunde Adeniran claim that the election processes were neither free nor fair.
Gbenga Daniel, Jimi Agbaje and Bode George had earlier withdrawn from the race for different reasons.
Bode George flayed the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, for what he considered as insulting the South-west region, given that Wike had said that the region’s contribution to the party had been minimal.
Since losing the presidential elections and several governorships and parliamentary seats in the last General Elections, the crisis-ridden PDP has not been at the forefront among the opposition political parties.
Prior to the National Convention that was held Saturday, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was entangled in a fierce leadership tussle [between Ali Modu Sheriff and Ahmed Makarfi], which was eventually settled by a ruling of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
As the power tussle between Sheriff and Makarfi dragged on, many of its adherents quit the party, further relegating it to the background.
The tussle might have helped other opposition parties to advance, including the National Conscience Party (NCP) – founded by the late legal luminary cum human rights activist Gani Fawehinmi – whose profile has risen rapidly according to opinion polls.
