Presidential Election Rerun: Kenya Supreme Court Hears Petition

Unic Press UK: Kenya’s Supreme Court has commenced hearing on the petitions against the presidential election rerun in which the incumbent president Uhuru Kenyatta was declared the winner by the  Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

The presidential election rerun, which was conducted in October 2017, was marred by violence, brutality of security forces and an opposition boycott; and marked by a very low turnout of voters – 38.8% of the eligible voters – when compared to the initial election of August 2017 in which circa 80% of the 19.6 million registered voters participated.

Kenya’s Supreme Court had annulled the first presidential election that was held in August, saying there were procedural irregularities.

Mr Kenyatta won the rerun, after his main challenger, Raila Odinga, called on his supporters to boycott the vote, arguing that the flawed processes during the initial polls had not been addressed.
