Antibiotic Resistance Is ‘Crisis We Cannot Ignore,’ UN Warns

Unic Press UK: The United Nations warns against irresponsible use of antibiotics, given the rising resistance to it in all parts of the whole wide world.

The alarm on the high levels of resistance to antibiotics, and the threats it poses came to the fore in the ongoing World Antibiotic Awareness Week that begun on Monday.

Speaking at the awareness week, the United Nations, through its Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE), clamored for responsible use of antibiotics in humans and animals to reduce the emergence of antibiotic resistance.

“Antibiotic resistance is a global crisis that we cannot ignore. If we don’t tackle this threat with strong, coordinated action, antimicrobial resistance will take us back to a time when people feared common infections and risked their lives from minor surgery,” said Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO)

To tackle these problems, FAO, WHO and OIE are leveraging their expertise and collaborating in a ‘One Health’ approach to promote best practices to reduce the emergence and spread of antibiotic-resistant microbes, the UN News Centre reports.
