Shehu Sani Tells Buhari: Name All Looters Of Nigerian Assets

Unic Press UK: Shehu Sani, a Nigerian senator representing Kaduna Central District, has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to ensure that the impending public disclosure of a list comprising the names of the individuals who looted public properties goes beyond mere naming culprits in the opposition camp, otherwise the exercise would necessarily mean witch-hunt.

President Muhammadu Buhari had pledged to make public a list of treasury looters in compliance with the ruling of a Federal High Court with regard to Freedom of Information (FOI) suit number FHC/CS/964/2016, the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) said, quoting a statement by the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, who doubles as the Minister of Justice.

During a parley between Malami and the representatives of SERAP, the Attorney General of the Federation said:

“President Muhammadu Buhari has directed all relevant agencies to compile documents on names of all looters with a view to promptly enforcing the judgment of a Federal High Court in Lagos ordering the government to release to Nigerians information about the names of high ranking public officials from whom public funds were recovered.”

Reacting to the outcome of a meeting with the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, SERAP’s executive director Adetokunbo Mumuni, said:

“Mr Malami informed us that President Buhari has directed the Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Finance, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and other relevant agencies involved in the recovery of looted funds to promptly put the documents together with a view to fully and promptly enforcing the judgment by Justice Shagari.”

The field agents of the Unic Press UK have submitted that the majority of Nigerians seems to regularly call into question the commitment of the Buhari administration to tackling corruption head-on.

Some of the people, who spoke to our agents, mentioned the recent recall of and reinstatement in the Nigeria civil service, of the former head of a presidential task force on pension reforms, Abdulrasheed Maina, who, despite being sacked from the civil service in 2013, is currently on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) radar as a fugitive. This action of the government has further raised questions about Buhari integrity and the seriousness of his administration toward addressing corruption in Nigeria.
