Osinbajo, Acting President Condemn Killings In Taraba State

Unic Press UK: Nigeria’s acting president Yemi Osinbajo yesterday met the editors’ and publishers’ of media organisation in a continuation of his consultations with stakeholders over rampant hate speeches and ethnic agitations from different regions that threatens the unity of Nigeria.

Osinbajo commiserated with the victims of attacks in a community in Sardauna Local Government Area, Taraba state, where lots of people were killed in ethnic-related violence. The Fulani community in Sardauna Local Government Area of Taraba State claim that many Fulani people had been killed, accusing the Mambilla people of Taraba of pursuing ethnic cleansing against the Fulani people in the area.

Earlier this week, Osinbajo asked the state governors to ensure that hate speeches and divisive actions were subdued in their respective states’ to avert a breach of the peace.

“We must not allow the careless use of words, careless expressions that may degenerate into crisis… We must be careful of how we express ourselves. What we have seen in recent times is that some of the languages used have tended to degenerate badly and I think that we must begin to speak up against some of these things… From all of the consultations we have had, all agreed on certain issues. We agreed that Nigeria’s unity should not be taken for granted. No one wants to see us go done the path of bloodshed or war,” said acting president Osinbajo.

In the last couple of weeks’ the acting president had engaged in a series of meeting on ethnic tensions in Nigeria as a way of dousing widespread angst/anxiety that overwhelmed parts of the country when a quit notice was served on the Igbo people by a coalition of northern groups that met in Kaduna this month, June.
