Glasgow Airport Undergoes Massive Repairs Without Closure: Lessons For Nigeria

Unic Press UK: Glasgow Airport, “a key component of Scotland’s transport infrastructure”, serving more than nine million passengers every year, is presently undergoing massive repairs on its runway, without major disruptions to its service.

Glasgow Airport data on air traffic, runway, passengers…

  • Opened: 1966
  • Operating hours: 24 hours a day, 365 days a year
  • Runway: One main (2658m long)
  • Terminals: Two –  main terminal plus a smaller T2 facility
  • Airlines: 30
  • Destinations: 120 worldwide
  • Air transport movements per year: 86,000
  • Passengers per year: 9.4 million
  • Air cargo per year: 13,033 tonnes
  • Status: Scotland’s principal long-haul airport

The repairs to the only major runway at one of Scotland’s busiest airports usually start at 23:00 hrs every night, finishing in the early hours of the day to enable the airport open for business before 06:00 hrs every day.

This feat by the owners of Glasgow Airport, offers valuable lessons to the Nigerian authorities given that the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Nigeria’s capital, Abuja, with only 50% of passengers when compared to Glasgow Airport, is presently closed for a six-week period, from 8th March 2017 until 19th April 2017 for repairs to its main runway.
