The Gambia Crisis: Again, Jammeh Hits Brick Wall In Supreme Court

Unic Press UK: The Gambia Supreme Court says it cannot grant an injunction to stop the inauguration of president-elect Adama Barrow.

The Gambia chief justice Emmanuel Fagbenle said his ruling was based on the fact that he [Fagbenle] was a subject of an injunction that seeks to stop the swearing in of Adama Barrow.

Fagbenle ruled that the case will be heard when the court is properly constituted. This means that, after Wednesday, the 18th January 2017, Jammeh Mansa has to quit, otherwise his stay in office would become illegal. Adama Barrow is expected to take over power on Thursday, the 19th January.

The results as announced in December 2016 by the country’s independent electoral commission was:

  • Adama Barrow: 222,708 votes
  • Jammeh Babili Mansa: 208,487 votes

This is the second time President Jammeh lost at the Supreme Court as his tries to hold on to power.
